Oprah Apologizes

If anybody knows the healing power of public mea culpas, it's Oprah Winfrey

The daytime queen profusely apologized to the parents of students at her all-girls school in South Africa for a sex-abuse scandal that resulted in the dismissal of one of its dormitory matrons.

"I've disappointed you. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry," a tearful Winfrey told angry families who showed up for an emergency meeting at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, according to South Africa's news.24.com, a leading news site.

Allegations surfaced two weeks ago that a "dorm parent" had been accused of fondling a girl and physically and verbally abusing several others, including grabbing them about the neck, beating them and hurling them against a wall.

The talk-show host made her second visit to the school, located in the town of Henley-on-Klip, just south of Johannesburg, in as many weeks. She reportedly took full responsibility at the gathering and begged parents to forgive her for the staff member's behavior.

The accusations came to light after one of the pupils ran away, purportedly because she couldn't stand the alleged abuse any longer.

Winfrey suspended the matron and at least one other staffer. The school's principal, who the girls complained had failed to take action, was placed on paid administrative leave as detectives and Child Protection Services probe the reputed misconduct.

"I trusted her," Winfrey told the families regarding the principal. "When I appointed her, I thought she was passionate about the children of Africa. But I've been disappointed." Read More

Mariah Carey on her new fragrance

Even though Mariah Carey has a new fragrance, she never was the type to spray on a scent before she left the house. In fact, Carey says she never really wore perfumes until she fell in love with her own creation, "M."

"This is the first fragrance that I wear," Carey told The Associated Press in an interview Monday. "I'm not really a perfume person at all ... Things that are too strong and overwhelming, that's what I was always not a fan of."

But when Elizabeth Arden approached the superstar to create her own perfume, it piqued her interest — mainly because the cosmetics company didn't want to use just her name, but wanted her input in the creation of the scent, which she describes as light, sensual and memorable.

"They were welcoming in my involvement just in every detail, and that was what was the most exciting thing to me," said Carey.

Carey says the fragrance, which comes in a purple bottle with her signature butterfly icon on top, was based on some of her favorite things. One is a Moroccan incense; another is a flower called the Living Tahitian Tiare. But another scent mixed into the fragrance is unexpected: toasted marshmallows.

That aroma was added because it evoked happy memories of her childhood around the campfire. But she adds: "It's blended in there — it's not like you're gonna walk around smelling like marshmallows."

Carey worked on "M" while on tour and working on her latest album, and said she spent as much time on launching the fragrance as she did working on her music career: "I'm obsessed with it!"

But now she's back to putting most of her focus on the new record, due out early next year. The as-yet-untitled album is the follow-up to her multiplatinum comeback disc, "The Emancipation of Mimi," which earned her three Grammys.

"It's hard for me to sit here and talk about it without sounding like I'm bragging if I'm in love with it, but I'm in love with this album," she says. "I think that having the success with the last record allowed me to have more freedom. ... and just make records that I like. It's kind of a really fun record."

M by Mariah Carey is an Eau de Parfum, and will be available in 30, 50 and 100 ml. Click on the button below to purchase the fragrance.

Supermodel Gisele trades thongs for heels

Supermodel Gisele Bunchen arrives at her new footwear collection launch
"Gisele Bundchen Ipanema Collection", at Melbourne's Alumbra, Docklands. There was a time in Australia when thongs were rubbery and were worn to the beach and backyard barbies, and when sandals and walk socks went together like a meat pie and sauce.

But Brazilian glamazon Giselle Bundchen is in Australia to give the classic Aussie footwear a fashion boost.

Bundchen launched her Ipanema Collection, a range of thongs and sandals distributed in Australia by Melbourne firm Novo Shoes, at Central Pier in Melbourne's Docklands on Wednesday night. But the model made no apologies for not wearing the summery footwear that bears her name to the launch party. She arrived fashionably late in a sleek Mercedes Benz saloon, wearing strappy heels to match an ivory, mid-length dress. "Because it is evening. I think they are more for the day," she said of the Ipanema range.

A short time later, she told the 200 or so guests she had "nothing but warm welcomes" since her arrival in Australia this week. "I feel like the president here," she said as Melbourne fashionistas cheered for her. A percentage of Ipanema Collection sales will be donated to the Pure Xingu Water campaign, aimed at preserving the headwaters of the Xingu River system in Brazil's Amazon region.

'Diddy' Being Investigated

NEW YORK - A man has accused Sean "Diddy" Combs of punching him out during a dispute at a trendy Manhattan nightspot, but the rap mogul's lawyer called it a harmless "disagreement."

Police were investigating the report of an assault early Saturday at the club in SoHo, but declined to identify any suspects.

Law enforcement officials confirmed news accounts Tuesday that Combs, 37, was the alleged assailant. Investigators were seeking to locate more witnesses before questioning Combs, said officials, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation hadn't not been completed.

In a statement, Combs' attorney denied any wrongdoing by his client.

"We hope this matter will be resolved without the filing of any criminal charges as it was a disagreement among acquaintances, not a criminal assault," said the attorney, Benjamin Brafman.

Police said the incident occurred at about 3:30 a.m. inside Kiosk nightclub. The 31-year-old man told police that he and Combs had been arguing over a woman before Combs punched him in the face, the officials said.

Earlier this month, a hip-hop promoter filed a $5 million lawsuit claiming Combs unleashed three violent bodyguards on him in another New York City nightspot. The lawsuit alleged that after the plaintiff spoke to Combs in The Box, one bodyguard punched him in the mouth, knocking him backward onto a table, and two others began hitting and kicking him continuously.

In 2001, a jury cleared Combs of firing a weapon during a 1999 dispute at a Times Square club that wounded three bystanders, and of bribing his chauffeur with money and jewelry to take the rap.

Combs recently placed third in "Hip-Hop Cash Kings" rankings by the Web site Forbes.com, which put his 2006 income at an estimated $28 million.

He has a clothing line, Sean John; heads Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group and its record label; and hosts MTV's "Making the Band" series.
